When my in-laws moved to North Carolina, I wanted to make them a housewarming gift that was NC-themed. This is how the 'Bear Glass' came to be.
It is my favorite image to etch. Etching by hand allows me to make the fill area look like hair because of the individual cuts.
The body and outline are done with a small diamond bit. As it is a black bear, the muzzle area is done with a white stone bit that doesn't cut as deep to indicate a color change.

I've had requests for other motifs over the years and have since added designs like the sea turtle, palm leaf, sea horse, magnolia, pine trees, a racehorse with jockey (for a Kentucky Derby order), and many more.
